PhoenixEarly History.... Ancestry to this region of Arizona belonged to a well established, civilized community who were given the name 'Ho Ho Kam' by roving Indians. This meant ' the people who have gone'. This ancient society, dating back to 700 A.D. and 1400 A.D., built nearly 135 miles of irrigation canals in the area which gave raise to fertile land. Hundreds of years later in 1867; a man named Jack Swilling from Wickenburg stopped to rest his horse at the foot of the White Tank Mountains. Looking down into the Salt River Valley he saw farm land full of rich soil, predominately free from rocks and beyond the reach of heavy frost or snow. After creating an irrigation company, he began digging canals to divert water from Salt River. Soon a small colony had formed and by 1868; Phoenix was recognized by Yavapai County Board of Supervisors.... Please read more on the vast history of Phoenix - thank you! |

ScottsdaleEarly History.... Army Chaplain Winfield Scott visited the area in 1888 and decides to purchase a section of land from the government. This one square mile of land was from Scottsdale Road to Hayden Road and from Indian School Road to Chaparral Road. After deeding a portion of the land, north of the canal, back to the government he asked his brother George Scott to move to the property. It was during this time from 1889 to 1893 that his brother farmed the land while he was in the Army. Old civil war wounds made it difficult for Chaplain Scott to continue serving - so he retires to his farm. The next year Albert G. Utley, a Rhode Island banker, buys the section of land just to the north. Soon the banker subdivides a portion of his own land and plans to name the town site Orangedale. For unknown reasons the town site was quickly changed to Scottsdale.... Please read more of the history of Scottsdale - thank you! |

Paradise ValleyEarly History... During the latter part of the 1800's this area was mainly used for the grazing of cattle. Surrounded by the McDowell Mountains to the east and Camelback Mountains to the south cattle were free to room. It was not until the 1880's that the Rio Verde Canal Company decided to turn this beautiful area into an irrigated farmland. Later in 1889, three surveyors were brought in by the Rio Verde Canal Company. To their astonishment, the tranquility of the desert landscape was so peaseful. As a result, they named this area Paradise Valley... Please read more on the history of this city. Thank you! |
